Smile is a song based on an instrumental theme used in the soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film Modern Times. Chaplin, who composed the song, was inspired by Puccini's Tosca. John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954. In the lyrics, based on lines and themes from the film, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile.

Lyrics

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrows
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although our tears may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you smile

When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by

If you smile, smile
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile (smile)
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
